Labor split over entry to Netanyahu coalition
By Haaretz Service

The division among Labor lawmakers continued on Wednesday, one day after the party approved a deal struck by its leader, Ehud Barak, to bring Labor into Prime Minister-designate Benjamin Netanyahu's incoming government.

Outgoing Education Minister Yuli Tamir said Thursday she had yet to decide if she would vote with the government. She opposed Tuesday's decision to join Netanyahu's coalition, arguing her party would serve as a fig leaf for hard-line policies.

MK Sheli Yachimovich echoed Tamir's remarks on Thursday, saying she would find it difficult to approve the formation of the government in the Knesset.

"In the vote next week I will certainly find it difficult to vote for Yvet Lieberman, which for me is a nightmare, so I assume I'll find a middle way and use the leeway that MKs have and simply won't participate in the vote. I've done this before," Yachimovich told Israel Radio.

She was using the nickname of Yisrael Beiteinu chairman Avigdor Lieberman, who will likely serve as Israel's next foreign minister.

But Deputy Defense Minister Matan Vilnai, a supporter of Barak's move, said Labor would have a moderating effect on Netanyahu's coalition.

"There is no doubt that Labor will pull the government to the center," said Vilnai, speaking to Israel Radio.

At Tuesday's party convention, 680 delegates voted to back Barak and join the coalition, while 507 voted against. The convention also empowered Barak, who will continue as defense minister in the new government, to appoint the party's ministers and deputy ministers in the new coalition as he sees fit.
