Israelis protest Haifa showing of 'Body Worlds' exhibit

Israelis who claim that an exhibit featuring real human bodies is harmful to religious sensitivities are threatening to take legal action in an effort to prevent the display.

The Israel National Museum of Science in Haifa will host "Body Worlds", an exhibit of real human bodies organized by Dr. Gunther von Hagens.

Last Friday, attorneys appealed to Haifa mayor Yona Yahav, Science, Culture and Sports Minister Raleb Majadele in an effort to ban the exhibit, and the museum itself in a bid to deny the exhibit's showing in Israel.

"Would, by contrast, anyone conceive of an exhibit of the bodies of Jews that were found in the extermination camps in one of the Holocaust museums being accepted with such aplomb in the state of Israel?" Aviad Hacohen, an attorney representing a group of protesters, wrote in a letter.

The exhibition includes 20 authentic bodies of people and over 130 internal organs that have undergone special preservation which allows them to be displayed in great detail.

The bodies are of people who agreed to donate them for the exhibit prior to their deaths so as to help enrich general knowledge of the human anatomy. The exhibit, which has been displayed worldwide, has attracted over 26 million visitors.
