Egypt may boycott peace treaty anniversary over Lieberman pick
By Barak Ravid, Haaretz Correspondent

The Egyptian ambassador to Israel is threatening to boycott the ceremony marking 30 years of relations between the two countries, as a protest against the pending appointment of Avigdor Lieberman as foreign minister.

The Foreign Ministry is trying to convince Yasser Rida to participate in the event, scheduled for next Wednesday at the Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem.

A senior government official said Egyptian officials had told Israeli officials that they cannot ignore the appointment of the Yisrael Beiteinu head, who has denounced Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

The Israeli official said the Egyptians are clearly dissatisfied with the appointment, and want to show that it is no longer "business as usual."

A final decision on the boycott will be made in Cairo. Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit still has not yet ruled on the matter, but the official said Aboul Gheit's attitude is extremely negative.

Over the past two weeks, the Egyptians have refused to cooperate over anything related to the 30th anniversary events, particularly the event planned at the Foreign Ministry.

"They have demonstrated a clear lack of interest in taking part," said the senior official. A senior Egyptian official said Wednesday no decision has been made yet.

Aboul Gheit spoke out publicly about Lieberman's appointment for the first time during a visit to the European Union in Brussels on Monday, hinting Lieberman might harm the peace process. Lieberman is viewed in Egypt as an extremist, particularly based on his past threats to bomb the Aswan Dam.
