Police: Lieberman investigation deals with alleged ongoing offenses

The investigation against Yisrael Beiteinu chairman Avigdor Lieberman also deals with alleged offenses that he continues to perpetrate, Police Superintendent Assaf Wolfish told the High Court of Justice on Monday.

"The investigation addresses offenses that are being perpetrated to this day, not just offenses that relate to 2001. We will not sit around and wait for the end of the investigations before we make a decision over the case; we will make a decision during the course of the investigation," Wolfish said during a court discussion over the appeal Lieberman filed over the ongoing investigation against him.

During the discussion, the court criticized the extension of the investigation against Lieberman. In response, ùttorney Dana Briskman of the State Prosecution said that although the case was originally scheduled to end in 2006, material obtained by police after that date warranted the continuation of the investigation.

"Should the Attorney General have ignored the new material because it arrived too late?" asked Briskman, who added that there are still six pending investigation requests pertaining to the case, and that the case is being closely followed by AG Menachem Mazuz and State Prosecutor Moshe Lador.

Briskman argued that public interest necessitates the completion of the investigation. Though she could not give an exact date for the conclusion of the investigation, she assured the court that it is in "advanced stages."

During the discussion the court was led to understand that Lieberman would be summoned for questioning again after the conclusion of coalition talks between Yisrael Beiteinu and Likud.
