Panel allows far-rightist Marzel to oversee Arab city poll

The central elections committee on Monday unanimously rejected a request from Attorney General Menachem Mazuz to disqualify Baruch Marzel from serving as the chief supervisor of a voting station in the Arab town of Umm el-Fahm.

The head of the committee, Supreme Court Justice Eliezer Rivlin, sent a bluntly worded missive to Mazuz in which he sharply criticized the manner in which the attorney general submitted the request.

Mazuz said that Marzel's presence in the city will harm the public order and the purity of the election process, and said that his request was based on information from security services and police.

Mazuz's suggestion that hundreds of police officers would be required to maintain order in the city is "an apocalyptic vision," Rivlin said. His decision received final approval by the committee's top body.

Last Friday, Rivlin rejected a request to ban Marzel from serving as a poll supervisor in Umm el-Fahm.

Marzel said Monday that police had no right to prevent him from serving as a polling station supervisor in the Israeli Arab city of Umm al-Fahm, Army Radio reported.

Marzel was quoted as vowing that he would do so "in spite of those haters of Israel."

Police were considering ways to prevent Marzel from serving in the post on Election Day out of fears that it could lead to disturbances in the Israeli Arab city.

On the morning of Election Day, police will make an assessment of the likelihood of violence, Army Radio said. If police determine there is a serious threat to Marzel's life, they say they will bar his entrance from the city.

In late January, the High Court approved a request by Marzel and fellow right-wing activist Itamar Ben-Gvir to march in Umm al-Fahm, saying that it must come after the election because of the recent hostilities in Gaza and the deteriorating security situation in Israel.
