VIDEO / Noam Shalit: Any truce deal must include the release of Gilad from Gaza custody
By Jack Khoury, Haaretz Correspondent

Noam Shalit, father of abducted Israel Defense Forces soldier Gilad Shalit on Saturday said any truce deal must include the release of Gilad from custody in Gaza.

At the same press conference, Gilad's mother Aviva said the family maintains hope that he will return.

"Under the circumstances the family views this unequivocal demand as a basic right and duty of any parents of soldiers."

Earlier on Saturday, the Shalit family published a letter saying "the Shalit family has followed the war in Gaza and is grateful for it's impending close. The family is expressing hope that the end of hostilities will also bring an end to Gilad's captivity."

The letter adds that Shalit's release would be in keeping with the moral foundations of the IDF.

"If Israel's leaders fail in returning Gilad home, Israeli society will pay a price much higher than that which is demanded for his return: It would damage the IDF's morals and fighting spirit."

Shalit was serving in the Armored Corps when he was kidnapped in a cross-border raid by Hamas militants on June 25, 2006 that left two other soldiers dead and three wounded. Shalit has been held by Hamas in Gaza since.

The cabinet will hold a vote on Saturday evening to decide whether to enact a unilateral cease-fire with Hamas in the Gaza Strip. The Headquarters for the Release of Gilad Shalit plans to hold a protest outside the Kirya where the cabinet is due to convene.

The decision would mean Israel has put an end to the three-week-long Operation Cast Lead without an agreement with Hamas, relying instead on the support of the United States and Egypt in battling arms smuggling into Gaza.
