Euroleague / Maccabi TA / Spanish ratchet up security ahead of game tonight
By Vered Cohen

Newspapers in Spain yesterday reported on the tight security arrangements ahead of Maccabi Tel Aviv's Euroleague game with local team Unicaja in the Spanish town of Malaga tonight.

Media outlets said some 80 plainclothes and uniformed policeman, including anti-terrorism officers, will be involved in providing security for the event.

"We've played against Maccabi in the past, but today there will be extra security because of the situation," the chairman of the Malaga team said, referring to the fighting in the south of Israel and the Gaza Strip. "I assure you both Maccabi's and our own fans will be safe."

Palestinian flags have been prohibited from the stadium, though a pro-Palestinian demonstration is scheduled to take place at the same time as the game about a kilometer away.

Tight arrangements are in place to avoid a recurrence of Bnei Hasharon's ordeal in Turkey last week when fans stormed the court and chased the Israeli team into the locker rooms. Fearing they may be attacked by the mob, Bnei Hasharon refused to return to the court and a technical victory was ruled in favor of the local Turkish team.

Yesterday, graffiti related to the fighting in the Middle East was scrawled nearby the hotel in Malaga where Maccabi is staying. Public opinion in Spain leans toward the Palestinians and government officials have censured Israel's operation in the Gaza Strip.

Maccabi players yesterday focused on their goal of beating Unicaja, which delivered them defeat back in Tel Aviv.

"Malaga is one of the best teams in the league and its always hard playing against so many fans," Maccabi coach Pini Gershon said. "I hope we can keep our roll going and this is a pretty high hurdle, but we've been through worse before."

Maccabi's Carlos Arroyo also commented on the team's victory last week over Olympiacos and said he hopes they beat Malaga as well.

About 20 to 30 Israelis living in the area and members of the local Jewish community are expected to show up to support Maccabi.
