Earlier in the day, the man had been arrested and held at the checkpoint for trying to pass through it without identification. He managed to free himself at a certain point, after which he tried to grab one of the nearby Border Policemen's guns.

Meanwhile, Palestinian militants opened fire early Tuesday on an Israel Defense Forces patrol near the West Bank settlement of Kiryat Arba early Tuesday, lightly wounding three soldiers.

The wounded troops were evacuated to Jerusalem's Hadassah Ein Karem hospital for treatment.

On Thursday, Israeli security forces shot and killed a Palestinian man trying to blow up a gas station in the West Bank settlement of Mishur Adumim, near Jerusalem.

A Palestinian gas station attendant was lightly wounded in the incident.

Security forces were alerted mid-morning that a man was trying to torch the gas station.

When they arrived on the scene, they called out to the man to halt his activities at once and stand still. According to an initial investigation, the assailant then began running toward the security forces, holding an unrecognizable object in his hand.

Police investigators are still trying to determine the identity of the assailant. They believe that he was a Palestinian carrying out a terrorist attack in response to the Israel Defense Forces' offensive in the Gaza Strip.
