IDF soldiers come under fire at Syria border fence

A number of Israel Defense Forces soldiers came under cross-border fire on Sunday while working on the fence between Israel and Syria.

There were no casualties in the incident, but the bullets struck a few vehicles on site.

"In the afternoon, there were a number of bullets fired from Syria at an Israeli army force doing engineering work near the fence," an army spokesman said. "No one was hurt but a vehicle was damaged. Forces in the field are examining the incident and a complaint was sent to UNDOF which sent a team there. The circumstances of the incident are still unclear."

The IDF said that it did not appear as though the Syrian army was not involved in the incident. More likely, it said, Palestinian militants fired the shots to protest Israel's offensive in the Gaza Strip and to cause tensions on a second front.

Last week, militants in Lebanon fired at least Katyusha rockets into northern Israel in a similar attempt to draw Israel into new fighting.

Lebanon arrested seven militants allegedly behind the rocket launch, but would not release any concrete information on the suspects.

There was no immediate comment from Syria about Sunday's shooting.

About a week ago, UNIFIL and the Lebanese troops uncovered a bunker in south Lebanon, near a Palestinian village loyal to Hamas.

The forces found 34 Grad missiles and one launcher in the bunker, but said that the structure did not appear to have been used for some time.

According to reports from Lebanon, Hezbollah guerillas used the bunker during the Second Lebanon War in 2006
