Violent altercations broke out Tuesday between Jewish and Arab students at universities in Jerusalem and Haifa over Israel's offensive against Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

A scuffle broke out at the campus of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem after Arab students protested against the operation of the Israel Defense Forces in the coastal strip, while Jewish and Arab Students also clashed at Haifa University.

At least 10 protesters were arrested, including the chair of the Arab student union.

Officials at Haifa University said the protest against Israel was not pre-approved by the faculty, and therefore had to be dispersed with force.

The Arab student union said in response that the university was engaging in intimidation.
