An Israel Defense Forces soldier was killed in a gunbattle with Gaza militants on Sunday as the army deepened its ground offensive against the coastal strip's Hamas rulers.

The death of Sergeant Dvir Emmanueloff, 22, who was killed during a firefight in northern Gaza's densely populated Jabalya refugee camp, was the first fatality suffered by Israel since it launched the ground operation on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Palestinian sniper fire wounded three IDF soldiers in Gaza on Sunday evening, one moderately and the other two lightly so.

Another IDF soldier was seriously wounded in the Jabalya clash. He was later evacuated for treatment to the Soroka medical center in Be'er Sheva. Both soldier's families have been informed of the incident.

Emmanueloff, who served in the Israel Defense Forces Golani infantry brigade, was a resident of Givat Ze'ev, near Jerusalem. He was laid to rest late Sunday at Jerusalem's Mount Herzl military cemetery.

Israel's stated goal for the operation begun last Saturday was to destroy Hamas' infrastructure and to halt cross-border rocket attacks from Gaza that have plagued southern Israel for the past eight years.

A total of 34 Israel Defense Forces soldiers have been wounded, three of them seriously, in clashes with Gaza gunmen since the ground incursion began.
