Soccer / Last-place Forest wins 3-0 at Man City By The Associated Press Southend ties with Chelsea 1-1; Stoke City tumbles at Hartlepool 2-0 Nottingham Forest won 3-0 at free-spending Manchester City for the biggest upset in the third round of the FA Cup yesterday and Southend scored an injury-time equalizer to snatch a 1-1 draw at Chelsea. Nathan Tyson and Rob Earnshaw scored first-half goals for League Championship club Forest at the City of Manchester Stadium. Joe Garner added a third in the 75th minute to embarrass manager Mark Hughes, whose team is also struggling in the Premier League, despite being bought by a hugely wealthy Abu Dhabi business group four months ago. Advertisement Although Hughes has managed to lift the club out of the Premier League relegation zone following a brief recent sojourn there, yesterday's loss is just the latest to cast doubt upon his future with the club. "I know exactly what is needed here," Hughes said. "The work we do on a day-to-day basis makes players better. They have to be brave enough to perform in matches. Today some were guilty of not doing that." While it was more misery for Hughes, whose team paraded new signing Wayne Bridge before kickoff, it was a great result for Forest's new manager Billy Davies, who was appointed on Friday but doesn't officially take over until Monday. Hughes said he needs more players to make City the team he wants it to be, but doubts he can get them all during the January transfer window - even with the club's huge financial resources. "We know the areas of the squad we have to strengthen and we will try to do that," Hughes said. "It is not going to happen in this window, or even two or three. We need more time." Peter Clarke scored an injury-time equalizer on his 27th birthday for League One club Southend after Salomon Kalou had given Chelsea a 31st-minute lead. "The only way we were going to get anything out of the game was to ride our luck," said Southend manager Steve Tilson. "We did that and then the keeper [Steve Mildenhall] made a fantastic save [from Franco Di Santo] right at the death. We could have been three or four down but the keeper kept us in it." The result was a big embarrassment for Blues coach Luiz Felipe Scolari, whose team was a huge favorite to beat the modest lower-division team. "We drew because we made a mistake in the last minute," Scolari said. "We were better than Southend today, very much better, but we could not score a second goal. The result was not good but the performance - you could not say that. I am 100 percent confident I am doing the right thing." Stoke tumbled 2-0 at League One side Hartlepool, whose second-half scorers were Michael Nelson and David Foley. League One side Peterborough drew 1-1 at West Bromwich Albion thanks to an 87th-minute equalizer by Craig Mackail-Smith and defending champion Portsmouth also faces a replay after being held 0-0 at home by League Championship club Bristol City. There were only three matchups of Premier League teams. Sunderland edged Bolton 2-1 and Hull and Newcastle will need a replay after a 0-0 draw. On Friday, Tottenham beat Wigan 3-1. Arsenal beat Plymouth 3-1 thanks to two goals from Robin van Persie, Everton won 1-0 at Macclesfield as a result of Leon Osman's 43rd-minute strike and West Ham outplayed Barnsley 3-0 with goals by Herita Ilunga, Mark Noble (penalty) and Carlton Cole. Premier League leader Liverpool won 2-0 at Preston, but led only through Albert Riera's 25-minute shot into the top corner until substitute Fernando Torres marked his return from a six-week injury absence by rounding off an injury-time counterattack with a tap-in from close range. It was the Spain striker's sixth goal of the season and first ever in the FA Cup. Middlesbrough beat non-league Barrow 2-1 with two goals from Afonso Alves and Andrew Johnson's two gave Fulham a 2-1 victory at Sheffield Wednesday. Among matchups of teams from outside the Premier League, League Championship club Derby won 4-3 at non-league Forest Green after trailing 2-0 and 3-2. Four of the scheduled 28 third-round games were called off because of frozen pitches. Manchester United, which has won a record 11 FA Cup titles, goes to Championship side Southampton today and Aston Villa visits Gillingham. Tomorrow, Blackburn visits non-league Blyth Spartans.
