Lieberman probe won't close until after election
By Jonathan Lis

Senior police officers said recently that the investigation of MK Avigdor Lieberman (Yisrael Beiteinu) on suspicions including fraud and money-laundering will not be completed before elections are held in February.

The police said completion of the probe, which began in 2001 and is one of the longest in police history, has been delayed by the complexities of the case, giving it an unknown completion date.

Lieberman was questioned under warning on suspicion of taking bribes through fictitious bank accounts and a consulting company in which his daughter Michal worked. The police suspect that Lieberman took the bribes when he was infrastructure minister and transport minister, between 2001 and 2004, through companies he controlled.

Billionaire gambling tycoon Martin Schlaff and international businessman Michael Cherney are believed to be behind the alleged bribes.

Lieberman has denied all charges, claiming that police are trying to frame him. A High Court petition he submitted to end the investigation was rejected.

Police say the main reason the investigation is taking so long is because Lieberman refused to allow them to look at materials they confiscated from his lawyer.
