The effects in Israel of the economic crisis are spreading fast to the bodies of children, many of whom a recent study has found to be undernourished.

The Health Ministry recently released nutritional recommendations for children, outlining a diverse menu that should combine protein, vegetables, fruits and grains.

But new research reveals a startling state of affairs: 40 percent of families in Israel can't afford the recommended package.

The National Insitute for Health Policy released data showing that feeding one child between the ages of one and three costs 470 shekels. Food for a child between the ages of 4 and 5 costs 623 shekels, between 6 and 11, 672 shekels, and between 12 and 18, 890 shekels. Those numbers represent a major portion of the salaries of many Israelis.
