Lieberman: Decent defense minister could solve Gaza problem in 2 months
By Haaretz Staff

Yisrael Beiteinu chairman MK Avigdor Lieberman on Tuesday lambasted Defense Minister Ehud barak for failing to put a swift end to rocket fire from the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip.

"A normal defense minister would have solved the problem within a month or two," he told Army Radio. "Whoever is unable to do that, should resign immediately."

"I can't accept that the Israel Defense Forces, the Mossad and Shin Bet cannot defeat a bunch of terrorists," he said.

The firebrand rightist described Barak's policies as an attempt to subordinate Israel's security needs to narrow party political interests.

"We are begging Hamas for a cease-fire, and it is a devastating demonstration of weakness," he said.

Lieberman also denied reports he is negotiating a prospective merger with Likud.

"There are no talks or contacts for the unification of Likud and Yisrael Beiteinu," he added. "The media relies on anonymous sources, whom I can't beat."
