A.B. Yehoshua opera fuses Hebrew's guttural sound with European form

Israeli singers have recently been fusing the guttural, Middle Eastern sound of their native Hebrew with the classic European form of opera, in a production based on a novel by acclaimed writer A.B. Yehoshua.

The opera, A Journey to the End of the Millennium, like the novel that gave rise to it, follows the movements of an Jewish Algerian merchant making his way across Medieval Europe.

Usually, Israeli opera singers are faced with the challenge of correctly enunciating foreign languages. This time, however, it was Hebrew that tested their abilities.
