Basketball / Maccabi Tel Aviv easily dismantles Rishon Letzion
By Steve Klein

Maccabi Tel Aviv destroyed Maccabi Rishon Letzion yesterday, opening up a 22-point lead in the first quarter en route to a 114-75 thrashing. Pini Gershon, Maccabi's new coach, gave a glimpse of the team's glory days, even if they only whipped a team scraping the bottom of the Premier League barrel. The win put Tel Aviv (7-1) back in a first-place tie with Hapoel Jerusalem.

Tel Aviv enjoyed a balanced attack led by Omri Casspi (22 points), Lior Eliyahu (21 points) and Yaniv Green (19 points). The only Rishon players who gave Maccabi problems were Robert Conley with 22 points and Gil Mossinson, who added 19.

The best Rishon could do was trim the lead in the second quarter back to 19. They trailed 56-37 at halftime as Maccabi got lazy in the closing minutes. However, Tel Aviv started the second half with a 12-0 run that dispelled any thoughts of making the game a close contest.

Maccabi's largest lead came early in the fourth quarter, when it stretched the margin to 44 points at 98-54.
