News in Brief

The Labor Party made a mistake when it called on Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to resign after he had already announced he was planning to step down if he was served an indictment, Infrastructure Minister Benjamin Ben-Eliezer (Labor) said yesterday. "We should have wished him that his innocence be proven, and nothing more. ... As we say, you don't shoot a man who's been shot," Ben-Eliezer said at an event in Ramat Gan. (Haaretz Staff)

Some 2,000 Central Bureau of Statistics census-takers will kick off the once-a-decade census today, sending letters to the 350,000 households that will be included in the sample. On December 28, 10 days after the letters should have all been sent, the census-takers will conduct interviews at the homes being surveyed. That phase should be completed by February 19. The 350,000 households include 1.2 million citizens. (Moti Bassok)

The defendants in the murder of 4-year-old Rose Pizem are expected to submit their response to the indictment at the Petah Tikva District Court today. Lawyers representing Rose's grandfather Ronny Ron and her mother Marie-Charlotte Pizem, who have been charged with murdering the child, said the indictment was based on coincidental evidence. "This is a laconic and unclear indictment not based on factual evidence," said attorney Revital Swaid, who represents Ronny Ron. Rose Pizem's body was found in a suitcase in the Yarkon River this summer after a dramatic, highly publicized search. (Ofra Edelman)

A 14-year-old boy from the Upper Galilee town of Bana plunged to his death yesterday after slipping off a 20-meter-high cliff. Mustafa Zid Teet was out with friends in the area when they approached the edge of the cliff. He was rushed to hospital with head injuries, in serious condition, and was declared dead upon arrival. Police said they did not suspect foul play. (Jack Khoury)

A fire in an onboard kitchen forced an inbound El Al flight to make an emergency landing at Ben-Gurion Airport early Friday morning. Passengers noticed smoke aboard the full plane from Newark airport about an hour and a half before landing. El Al said, "A power failure in the aircraft's kitchen caused the spark. The crew switched off the electricity and contained the fire." (Zohar Blumenkrantz)
