IDF seeks to discharge son of murdered crime boss Alperon

The Israel Defense Forces is considering discharging Dror Alperon, son of the recently murdered crime boss, Ya'akov Alperon, due to his criminal record.

Alperon, who has almost completed his military service, received a letter from the IDF on Tuesday saying, "in view of your situation and the criminal procedure [against you], you have been placed in a unit for soldiers whose legal status does not enable them to continue their military service. The army is debating your continued service."

Alperon's father, Ya'akov, was murdered about two weeks ago by a bomb planted under his car. He is on trial for allegedly threatening and extorting a promoter for Herzliya nightclub parties and for threatening and assaulting a police officer on duty.

"Discharging Dror from the IDF is the worst thing that could have happened to him," said Ahuva, his mother, adding that she intends to appeal the decision.

She intends to appeal any decision to discharge Alperon from the IDF.

"Now, of all times, two weeks after his father's death and two months after completing three years in the IDF that he was so proud of," she said.

"Is this the army that accepts all parts of society? The indictment is childish and groundless, just like the cases opened again him, most of which have been closed," she said.

In the past three years, 11 criminal cases were opened against Alperon, seven of which were closed. Three have led to charges of damaging a vehicle, assault in a nightclub and extortion.

Ahuva Alperon said she would appeal the IDF's decision with, among other things, the letters from the prosecution advising him that the cases against him had been closed. She says they prove that all the times that Dror was arrested were a result of "police harassment and not because he was a hardened criminal."

She said that 24 hours after Ya'akov Alperon's death, the Valley District Police issued an indictment against him, which was delivered to the family by mail 10 days later. "The Tiberias police were always targeting Ya'akov and every time we went there on vacation they arrested him for all kinds of nonsense. Their harassment is continuing even after his death. The indictment was served in court during the funeral in an appalling lack of sensitivity."

In addition to the thousands of condolence and support letters that were sent to the Alperon residence after the murder, the family has also been harassed and pestered.

"An anonymous woman calls them on the phone every night and swears at the family members, men and children, incessantly," a police source said.

"The mother's complaints to the police failed to stop the calls, among other things because one of the Alperon boys is under house arrest, and the telephone line, which is connected to his electronic bracelet, cannot be cut off."

The police tracked down and questioned the woman, who is apparently disturbed.

Yesterday Ahuva Alperon received a letter with a drawing of Ya'akov and Dror in it. The father's image was marked with an X and the caption read "wacked." The son's image had an arrow on it with the caption: "Soon we'll get you."

Alperon gave the letter to the Tel Aviv Police Central Unit, which is investigating her husband's murder.
