Discount fires outsourced computer workers as costs rise
By Sharon Shpurer

Bank Discount's net profits tumbled 72% against the same period last year, it said Sunday. The bank also said that it is suspending 650 outsourced computer workers after netting just NIS 110 million, compared to NIS 392 million in the third quarter of 2007.

Discount said that earnings from financing activities fell 13% to NIS 1.06 billion, and operational revenues fell slightly as well.

The paring down of its outsourced workforce will be a part of an overall efficiency plan, which will also include merging of the marketing and strategic planning department and the Customer Assets department into other existing departments, and the number of managers will be decreased accordingly. Discount's vice president of marketing, Eli Hoter, announced that he will be stepping down from his position at the bank. Discount also announced that it plans to merge its investment consultancy activities and long term consultancy (retirement consultancy) activities.

Discount reported that its operational expenditures had increased by 2.5%, to NIS 1.29 billion, bringing profits from normal activities to about NIS 200 million, compared to NIS 467 million in the same period last year. Discount stock has suffered the sharpest drop in the industry, falling 65% compared to an average of 55% for the other banks.
