Prime Minister Ehud Olmert spoke with his Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh on Monday offering his condolences on the behalf of the Israeli people over the loss of innocent lives in a series of terror attacks that rocked India's financial capital of Mumbai last week, leaving at least 174 people dead, including Israelis.

In a statement released by the Prime Minister's Office Monday, Olmert said that he had voiced his great appreciation for the Indian authorities' brave and decisive response, adding that courage and decisiveness were the most important qualities when dealing with terror.

Olmert also thanked his colleague for the cooperation his country extended to Israel during the crisis.

Singh thanked Olmert for his message and reciprocated in offering his condolences over the deaths of Israeli citizens in Mumbai. "The Indian authorities' decisive action stemmed from our understanding that we mustn't negotiate with terrorists, but rather handle them with force," he said.

The two leaders agreed to continue the cooperation between their two countries and to coordinate closely in the two countries' war on terror.

Also Monday, Italian Foreign Minister Fanco Frattini sent a letter of condolences to his Israeli counterpart Tzipi Livni, in which he voiced his sorrow over the deaths of Israeli citizens in the Mumbai attacks.

Frattini wrote that he would like his condolences to be conveyed to the families of the victims as well as to Livni and the entire Israeli population.

Once again the Jews were a target of terror, Frattini wrote, condemning the incident. He added that in his view, these events prove that the international community must unite and coordinate its efforts to fight terror.
