Basketball / Premier League / Late surge powers J'lem past Holon
By Haaretz Sports Staff

Hapoel Jerusalem put on another offensive display, as it rode a fourth-quarter 27-9 run to defeat Holon 91-81 and maintain a share of first place. Gilboa/Galil also remains in first place after destroying Maccabi Rishon Letzion 86-63. At the other end of the standings, Ironi Ramat Gan forced overtime with Ironi Kiryat Ata and then secured its first league win with a 75-72 away triumph.

Several players scored in double digits for Jerusalem, but the difference was made by youngster Yuval Naimi, who had a breakout game with 27 points on 87.5 percent shooting from the field. Omar Snead contributed a double-double on 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Jerusalem maintained a small advantage throughout the first half and going into the third quarter, when Holon finally seemed to find a way to contain Sharon Shason and Timmy Bowers. Though Naimi continued to score, Holon's Luis Flores virtually scored at will. An easy basket by Uri Kokia gave Holon a 63-60 lead at the end of the third quarter and visions of an upset.

Instead, Jerusalem pounced all over Holon, reeling off nine straight points en route to building up a 15-point lead with less than two minutes to go.

In Rishon Letzion, Miki Dorsman realized he wasn't in Holon anymore when he had to face Oded Katash's red-hot Gilboa/Galil. The northerners ran a consistent, disciplined offense that built up a steady lead that grew to as much as 14 points midway through the second period, before Rishon pared the lead back to eight at halftime, 40-32.

That was as close as Rishon would get. Galil, paced by Brian Randle's 23 points and Brian Roberts - who added 19 - displayed its superior talent inside the paint and out.

Ahead of tonight's contest against Ironi Ashkelon, Maccabi Tel Aviv officials yesterday held a meeting to discuss signing Sharon Drucker as assistant coach. "He could add a lot," said head coach Pini Gershon.

"Some of his philosophy is the opposite of mine, but I prefer those who don't think like me." Ashkelon had not beaten Maccabi in five years of Premier League play until last May, but now hopes to make it two in a row.
