News in Brief

Deputy Prime Minister Haim Ramon yesterday said he advised his close personal friend Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to step down following the state prosecution's decision to indict him on graft charges. Ramon said on "Meet the Press" that he advised Olmert as a friend and not as a representative of the Kadima Party. Since the prosecution announced its decision, Olmert has been at loggerheads with Kadima leader Tzipi Livni over whether he should remain in office until the elections. Livni is insisting Olmert should resign. (Mazal Mualem)

A resident of the ultra-Orthodox settlement of Elad was seriously wounded Friday night when he tried to separate a group of brawling teenagers. The man, 24, suffered multiple stab wounds in his neck and shoulder. Police are currently searching for the perpetrator. A few hours later, paramedics were called to Elad again to treat several people who had been injured in another brawl. However, some of the brawlers then attacked the paramedics, injuring them and causing serious damage to their ambulance. (Yuval Goren)

The terminally-ill mother of a Tel Aviv woman charged with drowning her son died Thursday after her respirator was disconnected. Ludmilla Kruchkov's husband Yuri, her son Vitaly and her aide were detained for questioning. Vitaly told investigators he disconnected the respirator to resuscitate his 57-year-old mother after she stopped breathing, but police believe he may have sought to hasten her death. In September, Ludmilla's daughter Regina confessed to drowning her 4-year-old son. (Yuval Goren)

An elderly Haifa couple attempted suicide yesterday by taking lethal pills. The husband, 86, died, while his wife, 85, was found in serious condition and taken to the hospital. The couple left behind a letter divvying up their property among their three children. Their daughter, who found the letter, said both were in poor health. She arrived at the house yesterday afternoon, and found her parents in separate rooms, the father already dead and the mother barely conscious. She called Magen David Adom, which pronounced the man dead at the scene. (Fadi Eyadat)

A Be'er Sheva Magistrate's Court judge Friday extended by five days the remand of a woman suspected of throwing her newborn daughter into a trash bin. The judge came to the city's Soroka Medical Center to extend the remand, as the woman's medical condition prevented her from appearing in court. On Thursday morning, a woman saw something unusual in the trash bin near her home, and passers-by called the police. A Magen David Adom unit pronounced the baby dead. (Yanir Yagna)

MK Avraham Ravitz, chairman of the Degel Hatorah faction within United Torah Judaism, has decided to retire at the end of the current Knesset term after 20 years in the parliament. Ravitz, 74, informed the leaders of the Lithuanian ultra-Orthodox community, Rabbis Yosef Shalom Elyashiv and Aharon Leib Steinman, of his decision, but said he intends to continue as party head and serving the public. (Yair Ettinger)

Likud MK Gilad Erdan suggested yesterday that Israel hold Hamas and Islamic Jihad prisoners in open-air detention centers in the western Negev, where most of the rockets fired from the Gaza Strip strike, in order to deter such attacks. His call came after a barrage of rockets wounded eight Israel Defense Forces soldiers near the Gaza border on Friday. (Yanir Yagna)
