Former IDF Gaza chief charged in son's ATV cover-up
By Amos Harel
Tags: ATV, IDF, Israel News

The former commander of the Gaza Division of the Israel Defense Forces, Brig. Gen. Moshe Tamir, was charged Thursday with a number of offenses stemming from his decision to allow his 14-year-old son to drive an army ATV and the subsequent cover-up after the boy collided with a civilian vehicle.

The case could jeopardize Tamir's military career. He completed a two-year stint in Gaza last week, and before the April 2007 incident came to light, was thought to be up for promotion to major-general.

Military Advocate General Brig. Gen. Avichai Mendelblit decided to press charges against Tamir only after lengthy consideration of the case.

Tamir will be charged with obstruction of justice, misuse of military property, driving without a license (for allowing his minor son to drive a military vehicle without a license), offenses involving military documents and conduct unbecoming an officer.

In the months since the investigation began, Tamir's attorney, Moshe Israel, focused on the issue of the cover-up of the accident.

Military investigators concluded that Tamir delayed reporting the accident and even paid-off the civilian driver his son hit with the all terrain vehicle.

Tamir and Israel had hoped that any legal proceedings would deal only with the accident itself, and not the cover-up. Senior IDF officers believed that Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi, who was briefed frequently on the details of the case, would attempt to use his influence to reduce the charges.
