Belgian public broadcaster cancels ad that featured Hitler as a stripper

A Belgian public broadcaster that recently used a cartoon of Adolf Hitler dressed as a stripper to promote one of its shows has canceled the ad, after it drew condemnations from the German foreign ministry and from Belgian Jews.

?We did not mean to offend anyone,? Anne Stroobants, head of the press communication department for the television channel Canvas, told Haaretz this week. ?We regret if we did so.?

The channel belongs to the Flemish broadcaster VRT - which last month spiked a controversial cooking show on Adolf Hitler?s favorite dish. ?The ad was canceled immediately after the controversy surrounding the cooking show, but a few ads had already been printed,? Stroobants said.

VRT published the poster in a number of magazines, with a caption urging readers to ?look beyond the cliches and discover the real Europe.? Stroobants stressed the magazines were ?satirical in nature.?

In the German embassy?s formal reaction to the ad this week, spokesperson Michael Moscovivi wrote: ?We find it totally tasteless and disrespecting.? He added the campaign serves to take away from the significance of the Holocaust.

Michael Freilich, editor of the Jewish-affairs weekly Joods Actueel accused VRT of ?adding Hitler to their campaign for no obvious reason other than getting attention and angering the Jewish community.?
