News in Brief

The three leading candidates for prime minister, Tzipi Livni, Benjamin Netanyahu and Ehud Barak, all skipped the Sderot Conference for Society. Organizers of the event said Netanyahu and Barak, who were scheduled to speak at yesterday evening's closing session, had confirmed their participation but canceled yesterday morning. Livni was also asked to speak, but ultimately declined. In the past political leaders had gone out of their way to appear at the annual event, often giving rousing speeches. (Yanir Yagna)

There are still 448 voters living in the Gush Katif and Northern Samaria settlements evacuated in the summer of 2005, or at least they are still listed as living there. Before the previous elections, a special law was passed which allowed these voters to cast their ballots at special polling places allocated for voters with limited mobility. But that was a one-time law passed right after the evacuation, and there were thousands of voters involved then. It will not apply for the coming Knesset elections, and the Central Elections Committee has called on these voters to change their addresses. (Shahar Ilan)

Two Muslim clerics in Acre were questioned by the police recently on suspicion of incitement during the Jewish-Arab clashes in the city's eastern neighborhood. The two, an imam and a muezzin, allegedly called people out to the neighborhood once the Yom Kippur Eve riots had started. The imam admitted being present during the riots, but denied any kind of incitement. A police officer said the Imam's part in the incitement was not clear. After the riots, which were sparked after an Arab resident drove through a predominantly Jewish neighborhood, there was talk of a muezzin calling people to come to the area and protect the Arab families.
