Acre festival set for Hanukkah
By Michal Palti
Tags: israel news

Acre's fringe theater festival, which was canceled due to race riots in the mixed Jewish-Arab city this past October, has been rescheduled for Hanukkah.

The Acre Festival of Alternative Israeli Theatre is now scheduled to take place December 22-25, Acre Mayor Shimon Lankri and festival organizers decided Saturday.

The festival will now include Jewish and Arab youth walking on stilts, while its competition segment will offer nine out of 10 of the performances originally slated to take place over the Sukkot holiday.

"I'm glad it was understood that the festival is necessary and I hope that those who spoke in favor of Acre and its residents will show their loyalty to the festival and come," said the festival's artistic director, Daniella Michaeli.

This will be Michaeli's last year as director. "It was 10 times as frustrating to experience my last year like this," she said, referring to the cancellation. "It wasn't easy to see how much politics and the situation dictate culture."

The festival was canceled after riots broke out between Jews and Arabs on the night of Yom Kippur. Thirty people were arrested over the five days of violence.
