Israeli academics to accuse Scandinavian countries of anti-Semitism
By Cnaan Liphshiz
Tags: Sweden, Norway, anti-Semitism

A group of Israeli academics plans today to accuse the Scandinavian countries of anti-Semitism and racism at a symposium on the subject in Jerusalem.

The accusations will be heard at the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs, at what the organizers describe as "probably Israel's first comprehensive discussion into Scandinavia's approach to Jews and Zionism."

The symposium will include a lecture by Dr. Efraim Zuroff, the U.S.-born director of the Wiesenthal Center in Israel. "It's a little-known fact that Norway and Sweden are harboring Nazi war criminals hiding behind a statute of limitation on genocide," Zuroff told Haaretz.

The Norwegian, Swedish and Finnish embassies have declined to comment on the symposium, entitled "Behind the Humanitarian Mask: The Nordic Countries, Israel and the Jews."

The event draws from a recently-published book edited by the JCPA's Dr. Manfred Gerstenfeld, who will be speaking today along with a former Israeli ambassador to Sweden, Zvi Mazel.

Responding to the book - which notes Denmark's deportation of 21 Jewish Holocaust survivors during World War II - Danish Ambassador Lisselotte Plesner called the deportations "a tragedy." But she said the treatment of Denmark in it "may have been disproportionate" as almost all its 7,000 Jews were rescued.

She added that, in her opinion, Denmark does not have an anti-Semitism problem.
