State must get minor refugees out of jail
Advertisement

The state has two months to find an age-appropriate alternative to detention for two underage refugees from the Ivory Coast, the Haifa Administrative Affairs Court ruled yesterday. The two were arrested immediately after they crossed the Egyptian border and have been in a Hadera jail ever since. A special custody court upheld their detention on the grounds that the alternatives the state proposed were inappropriate for boys their age, but the boys appealed to the Haifa court, which ordered the state to come up with different, more appropriate options. Domestic violence in olim families drops

Domestic violence against immigrant women in general, and Ethiopian women in particular, hit a five-year low this year, the Immigrant Absorption Ministry reported yesterday. Not a single Ethiopian woman has been murdered this year, for the first time in five years, and of the 10 women who were killed by their husbands, only one was an immigrant, from the former Soviet Union. In contrast, 14 of the 23 women murdered by their spouses in the peak years of 2005 and 2006 were immigrants, including eight Ethiopians. Of the 16,515 police complaints about domestic violence filed this year, immigrant women accounted for a quarter - the lowest percentage since 2005. (Ruth Sinai)

Petah Tikva woman, 73, dies in home fire

A 73-year-old woman was killed yesterday after a fire broke out in her Petah Tikva apartment, apparently due to an electrical malfunction. Firemen broke into the house after receiving a call at 4:17 A.M., and found the woman lying dead on the kitchen floor. She had apparently woken up and tried to escape the flames, but died of smoke inhalation before she could reach the door. Later yesterday, another fire broke out in a Petah Tikva restaurant, lightly injuring one person. (Haaretz Staff)

Man jailed 14 years for raping pre-teen

Shlomo Sharabi, 29, was sentenced to 14 years in prison yesterday for raping and assaulting a 12-year-old girl in Ariel in 2003. The Tel Aviv District Court also ordered him to pay the victim NIS 100,000 in compensation. The court found that the girl had been walking home at about midnight when Sharabi, who was then working as a fireman in the local fire station, walked by and saw her. He grabbed her by the neck with one hand while covering her mouth with the other, then dragged her into a dark corner, threw her down and raped her. (Ofra Edelman)

Cop convicted for killing friend while showing off gun

A border policeman was convicted of manslaughter by the Nazareth District Court yesterday for accidentally killing a friend while off duty. The incident occurred a year ago, when Suhil Shalian, 20, of Kafr Kana was out with two friends, including Iliya Shorush. Shalian began telling the others about his service in the Border Police and decided to show off his gun by aiming it at Shorush's chest and pulling the trigger. However, he apparently forgot that it was still loaded from the night before, when he had used it to guard the wedding presents after his brother's wedding. (Eli Ashkenazi)

Golden Baha'i dome to get first renovation

The Baha'i Temple in Haifa will soon undergo its first renovation since the building was completed in 1953. As a result, its famous gilded dome will be covered for almost two years. The project includes reinforcement against earthquakes, replacing iron with steel, upgrading the electrical system and replacing the gilded panels of the dome. Preparations began this week for the work, which is expected to take four years and cost an estimated NIS 25 million, covered entirely by Baha'i donors worldwide. The dome will be covered in the middle of next year. (Fadi Eyadat)
