Soccer / Haifa, Netanya stay on top as Beitar falls
By Oren Kessler

Reigning champions Beitar Jerusalem ended the first round of the Toto Cup without a home win, drawing 1-1 with third-place Maccabi Petah Tikva. Beitar now finds itself in fifth place, 9 points behind league leaders Maccabi Haifa and Maccabi Netanya.

Striker Pablo Bastianini put the guests ahead 1-0 in the 34th minute, but Beitar recovered from a slow first half to even the score on a perfectly-placed Aviram Baruchyan goal in the 57th.

Meanwhile, league leader Maccabi Haifa regained forward momentum with a 4-1 away rout of Hapoel Petah Tikva. The Men in Green, coming off of two straight losses, seemed to have regained their winning form as goals from Mohammed Ghadir, Lior Rafaelov, Biram Kiyal and Shlomi Arbeitman landed them a comfortable win.

In other action, Bnei Yehuda prevailed 2-0 at home over Bnei Sakhnin. A violent foul in the 45th minute by forward Mohammed Abu Raiya on the host's Tamir Kahlon left Sakhnin with only 10 men, and Bnei Yehuda lost no time in making the most of the advantage, going up 1-0 in the 54th on a Pedro Galvan clear to Eliran Atar. In the 67th, the duo again teamed up for a score from one meter out, this time with both sides shorthanded at 10.

Earlier, league co-leaders Maccabi Netanya, led by German playing legend Lothar Matthaus, sailed past Ironi Kiryat Shmona, the struggling squad from the far north, 3-0, and Ashdod SC put away Hakoach Ramat Gan 3-2 at home, sending their opponents to the bottom rung of the league.
