Vilnai calls on settlers to end violence against troops, police in West Bank

Deputy Defense Minister Matan Vilnai on Saturday called on settlers to rein in the violence between members of their community and Israeli police and security forces in the West Bank.

"A law is a law. These instances will not be tolerated, not against IDF soldiers, the police, or Palestinian civilians," Vilnai said, during a meeting with Jezreel Valley residents.

Vilnai added "it's true that we are speaking about a handful of lawbreakers which are blemishing the entire settler community. But the leadership also has responsibilities. This is a dangerous situation facing security forces."

Vilnai also said that settlers will be removed from a house in the West Bank city of Hebron in line with a court decision.

The Supreme Court ruled last week that the settlers must leave the
four-story house on the edge of Hebron. The court's deadline has passed, and settlers say they won't leave.

Vilnai did not give a timetable for the removal of the settlers from the house.

The settlers moved into the house in March 2007. They claim they bought it from a Palestinian man.

Vilnai spoke spoke as thousands of Israelis visited Hebron for a religious occasion. They were guarded by helmeted Israel Defense soldiers in riot gear who lined the streets.
