News in Brief

Israel Defense Forces troops yesterday prevented a Palestinian from stabbing an IDF woman soldier near the West Bank city of Nablus. Troops overpowered the assailant, who was later found to be carrying an explosive device. The incident occurred at the Beit Eiba checkpoint. Another Palestinian was arrested yesterday at the Hawara checkpoint near Nablus after troops discovered he was carrying a knife with a four-inch blade. In September, an IDF soldier lost his sight in one eye after a Palestinian woman threw acid in his face at the Hawara checkpoint. (Haaretz Staff)

Palestinian militants fired a Qassam rocket into the western Negev yesterday as Ashkelon residents protested against an upsurge in cross-border attacks from Gaza. The Qassam attack was the latest violation of a five-month Israel-Hamas truce in the Gaza Strip. The rocket, which struck an open area in the Sha'ar Hanegev regional council, caused neither casualties nor property damage. Dozens of Ashkelon residents held the protest at the entrance to the southern city. (Haaretz Staff and Agencies)

Police used an undercover agent over the last year at the Israel Lands Authority in an investigation into bribery allegations, it emerged yesterday. The case marks the first time here police used an undercover agent to infiltrate such a government agency. The investigation revolved around four ILA employees suspected of offenses such as amending land-area dimensions on which tax levies were based. In exchange, the employees are suspected of accepting bribes including sexual favors provided with the brokering of lawyers and assessors. The suspects deny the allegations. (Jonathan Lis)

The ultra-Orthodox Shas party has adopted U.S. president-elect Barack Obama's campaign slogan "Yes, we can" as its main slogan in the upcoming election. The idea came from party chairman Eli Yishai. His spokesman, Ro'i Lachmanovich, said Yishai was impressed with the enthusiasm in Israel over Obama's election and concluded that the people here were "ripe for a revolution" of their own. Like Obama, Lachmanovich said, "We are also giving an opportunity to second Israel, which first Israel has not given it. Yes, we can have an education minister from among our own. Yes, we can get back the child allowances." (Yair Ettinger)

Deputy Defense Minister Matan Vilnai will head the Labor Party's organizational headquarters in the upcoming election campaign, party chairman Ehud Barak announced yesterday. The job involves organizing efforts by Labor activists throughout the country. MK Ophir Pines-Paz will head Labor's public relations operation, Barak said, while MK Eitan Cabel had already been tapped to serve as overall campaign chairman. Labor will hold its primary next week, and with polls predicting that the party could lose about half its current Knesset seats, competition for the list's top slots is fierce. (Barak Ravid)
