Soccer / Elephants come to town for friendly
By Moshe Boker

Dror Kashtan, the coach of the national soccer team, complained at yesterday's press conference about disruptions to the team's practices for its 2010 World Cup run ahead of tonight's friendly against Cote d'Ivoire. "Preparations for this game are not ideal, to say the least," said Kashtan.

"I know there are deals with Toto (the betting authority which sponsors cup games) and television, but there is a plan for the national men's team through 2009. Despite the deals the team has to be allowed to train."

The only other friendly before the Israel's next World Cup preliminary is against Hungary in February.

Vahid Halilhodzic, Cote d'Ivoire's Bosnian coach, did not hold back criticism from his team at the press conference. Speaking in French through a translator, he said Cote d'Ivoire, nicknamed the Elephants, is good on an individual level, but not as a team. He told reporters he has a team of egotists, and that in order to win he has to be a psychologist and pedagogue who rules with an iron fist. That's the only explanation for why his talented team had yet to show a win for all its efforts, he added.

NIS 40 million

The Israel Football Association aspires to raise NIS 40 million for its national teams above and beyond its regular budget, its chairman announced yesterday.

Avi Luzon said he would raise the money from donations so teams could reach tournaments in each of the next four years. "I don't want the 22-year-olds to be behind their European counterparts," he said.
