Beitar comes back to life to humble Netanya By Haaretz Sports Staff Events off the pitch almost overshadowed last night's encounter after Maccabi Netanya Director General Yaakov Beladev was arrested by police in connection with a bribes affair (see TheMarker section) and the publication of a bitter interview with Beitar Jerusalem owner Arcadi Gaydamak (see box). Still, soccer prevailed and surprisingly it was Beitar Jerusalem who emerged victorious over first-place Maccabi Netanya after coming back from behind to deliver a 2-1 defeat to Netanya coach Lothar Matthaus. Advertisement Netanya were first to take the lead in the 36th minute when Ravid Gazal successfully converted a penalty kick justly awarded to his team by the ref, who caught Beitar veteran David Amsalem foul Itay Shechter in the box. Beitar blitzed Netanya in the second half, displaying some of the skills that won the team back-to-back titles. Midfielder Michael Zandberg sent a genius assist to Amit Ben Shushan deep in the penalty box. Ben-Shushan then tipped the ball past Netanya's goalie, evening the score 1-1. Only two minutes later, it was Ben Shushan who set up a goal when he headed a lob by Aviram Baruchyan toward Barak Yitzhaki, who put the ball in the back of the net, completing a 2-1 comeback by Beitar. Beitar had a chance to go up 3-1 when it was unjustly awarded a penalty after Toto Tamuz took a dive in the box. But Baruchyan fumbled the shot and the score remained the same, delivering Maccabi Netanya its first defeat of the season.
