Soccer / Haifa loses ground on Mac. Netanya
By Moshe Harush and Ali Gali

Ironi Kiryat Shmona escaped Kiryat Eliezer Stadium last night with a 1-1 draw, costing a couple of crucial points to second-place Maccabi Haifa, which was trying to recover from its dramatic 3-2 loss last week to league-leading Maccabi Netanya.

Now that Haifa no longer looks invincible, opponents are seeing its weaknesses. "We knew if we could shut down Yaniv Katan," said Kiryat Shmona midfielder Abbas Suane, "we could play better, and we did."

Haifa struck first late in the first half, when Lior Refaelov bent a beautiful free kick from 20 meters into the net in the 42nd minute. However, in the 50th minute Eden Ben Basat shook off Haifa's Dekel Keinan and passed to Yuval Avidor, who knocked the ball into the open goal before him. Kiryat Shmona then hunkered down to preserve the away draw.

Hapoel Tel Aviv lost more ground at the top as it fell to Bnei Sakhnin 1-0. The game marked the return of Eyal Lachman as Sakhnin's head coach, who replaced Freddy David. Okocha scored the winning goal for Sakhnin in the 42nd minute. Hapoel's Yigal Antebi blew a penalty shot at the very end when Meir Cohen easily deflected his weak shot.

In Tel Aviv, Avi Nimni ran out of magic as Ashdod S.C. came back from a 2-0 deficit to secure a 2-2 draw. Maccabi Tel Aviv went up in the first half as Maor Buzaglo scored a header off a cross from Shiran Yeini and Yannick Kamanan added a goal of his own. However, David Revivo and Bulgarian striker Dimitar Makriev paired up twice in the 55th and 63rd minutes to equalize.
