Peres at Rabin memorial: Oslo Accords served the supreme Zionist interest

President Shimon Peres on Sunday opened an evening of events marking 13 years since the assassination Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin by lighting the "candle of Yitzhak" in memory of the slain leader at his official residence in Jerusalem.

The president, who as foreign minister worked closely in tandem with Rabin in touting the Oslo accords, met with Rabin's family.

Rabin was assassinated in 1995 by a right-wing gunman seeking to derail his government's peace moves.

During the ceremont in his memory, Peres said: "Yitzhak was murdered while on the ascent, where we both marched together in agreement with one another in order to lead the state of Israel to the realization of the dream of the nation of Israel over the course of generations - peace for all and security for everyone."

"[Rabin] went head-on, with courage and persistence, with no fear and with no hesitation. He believed with all his soul that we were serving the most supreme Zionist, national interest. It is out of this feeling, this believe that he summoned a rare heroism," Peres added.

The president concluded his remarks by expressing confidence that Rabin's vision would be realized. "The flame of hope that dimmed on the night of that horrible murder has not been extinguished nor will it be extinguished," Peres said. "It will illuminate Israel's future as a just society and as a Jewish, democratic state that sits securely with a peace agreement, in friendship and mutual respect with all its surrounding neighbors and all its citizens at home."

Peres also addressed a massive memorial gathering at Tel Aviv's Rabin Square, the site of the assassination.

"Yitzhak, you are missed, but your way has not been lost," the president said.

Peres implored those gathered to continue coming each year in memory of Rabin, saying that it is people like them who help Israel remaining democratic and safe from anarchy.
