Soccer / Beitar seeks win over Bnei Yehuda to revive title chance and owner's election prospects
By Haaretz Sports Staff

With the top two teams in the Premier League - Maccabi Haifa and Maccabi Netanya - not facing each other until Monday, attention turns to the foot of the table for the ninth round of games.

Beitar Jerusalem coach Reuven Atar is still deliberating over which players will make up his starting 11 for the Premier League match against Bnei Yehuda Tel Aviv tomorrow. The game is likely to have a direct bearing on Atar's future at Jerusalem, since another defeat could see Beitar drop into the bottom three of the league.

At the meeting Atar has held since last weekend's home defeat to Hapoel Tel Aviv, the coach told his players that he was pleased with their performance - even though they eventually lost - and told them that if they play the same way tomorrow, they should be good enough to beat Bnei Yehuda. The main point Atar is deliberating over is whether to bring Toto Tamuz back into the starting lineup, or whether to stick with Barak Yitzhaki and Amit Ben Shoshan, which would mean that Beitar would be playing without a natural striker for the second game in a row.

Atar stressed to his players the importance of victory over Bnei Yehuda, telling them that a win would not only end the run of defeats that has seen the team drop to ninth in the table and could even revive their flagging chances of winning the league title. While Atar continues to deliberate over Tamuz, he does seem likely to bring Yoav Ziv back into the first team in the left-back position, in place of Eliran Danin, who was poor in the defeat to Hapoel Tel Aviv.

One person who wants a victory over Bnei Yehuda even more than Atar is Beitar owner Arcadi Gaydamak, who has relayed messages to the players and coach that a win tomorrow is vital for team morale. His motivation, it seems, is to get the Beitar supporters in a good mood ahead of Tuesday's mayoral and municipal election, in which Gaydamak is a candidate.
