Airports seek to raise landing fees in step sure to exacerbating consumer angst

Haaretz.com/Channel 10 daily feature for November 3, 2008.

Despite the public's rising economic anxieties, the Israel Airports Authority has decided to pay for projects it seeks to undertake in ways likely to result in higher airline tickets for passengers traveling to Israel.

The fickleness of ticket prices has been unparalleled in recent months, thanks to wavering oil prices and a global economic crisis that threatens the budgets of both travelers and airline companies.

Despite those uncertainties, the Israel Airports Authority is seeking to increase landing fees in order to pay for a new control tower, wider runways, and improvements to the main terminal ? all upgrades which it says will improve passenger security.

The burden will primarily fall on airlines, which will have to pay higher fees to land at Ben Gurion International Airport.
