Abbas in Jordan: No peace pact with Israel this year
By The Associated Press

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said there would be no peace agreement with Israel before the end of the year, as envisaged at the Annapolis conference in November 2007.

"Frankly speaking there will be no comprehensive solution before the end of 2008," Abbas told reporters after talks with Jordan's King Abdullah II.

"There is no possibility for working out a partial agreement, because we seek a comprehensive accord," he said.

Since the Annapolis conference, Israel and the Palestinians have been involved in peace negotiations with the avowed aim of reaching a peace pact that tackles all the core issues Jerusalem, settlements, refugees and frontiers.

The outcome of the peace talks figured prominently in Abbas' talks with King Abdullah.

"We discussed the attitude that we can take pending the election of a new U.S. administration and the formation of a new Israeli government," Abbas said.

For his part, King Abdullah underscored the importance of reaching "a reconciliation" between Abbas' Fatah and the Islamic Hamas, saying such a step would be "instrumental in fulfilling the objective of setting up an independent Palestinian state," according to a royal court statement.

He promised continued Jordanian support for Abbas in his endeavors "to regain Palestinian rights through the negotiation process."

Israel, PA negotiators to hold joint briefing in Egypt next week

Israeli and Palestinian officials said Sunday that their chief negotiators would give top diplomats a rare joint briefing on the state of peace talks at a meeting in Egypt next week.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor said Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni would head Israel's delegation. Palestinian officials said Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and his chief negotiator, Ahmed Qureia, will lead their side to the Nov. 8 ministerial-level meeting of the Quartet of Mideast peace makers - the United States, European Union, United Nations and Russia.

Israeli and Palestinian officials said Livni and Qureia would together report to the Quartet members on their progress after nearly a year of peace talks, which have so far failed to produce an agreement.

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who is scheduled to visit the Middle East from November 5 to 9, is to attend the meeting, in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheik.

Rice had asked Egypt to host the gathering before President George Bush's term ends in January. Bush hosted a peace conference in Annapolis, Md., a year ago where he expressed hope for an Israeli-Palestinian peace deal before year's end.

The Sharm Sharm el-Sheik review comes at a time of leadership changes in the United States and Israel. The U.S. installs a new president in January and Israel on Feb. 10. holds general elections triggered after Prime Minister Ehud Olmert announced he would step down to face corruption allegations.

Any results officially reported to the Quartet from Palestinian-Israeli talks so far could become a basis for future negotiations, even if a different Israeli government takes power.
