Haifa now alone at the top

Maccabi Tel Aviv free fall continues despite being home

Maccabi Haifa romped over Hakoah Ramat Gan yesterday 3-0 and moved into sole possession of first place as Netanya missed a 90th-minute penalty and had to settle for a 2-2 draw with Bnei Yehuda.

"Maccabi Haifa is out of our league," said Ramat Gan head coach Dudu Dahan.

Early goals by Lior Refaelov and Gustavo Boccoli in the 12th and 17th minutes signaled the Greens' command of the match. "We could have scored six or seven goals," said Haifa coach Elisha Levy after the game. "We played flowing soccer. We made what was supposed to be a tough game easy, moving the ball well and scoring elegant goals.

In Netanya, Itay Shechter made a careless penalty shot that Bnei Yehuda goalkeeper Dele Aiyenugba easily deflected, leaving the teams tied at two as Netanya dropped two points short of Haifa. Bnei Yehuda had shocked the home fans by going ahead 2-1 in the 67th minute when Pedro Galvan found Eliran Atar free in the penalty area to score. Down 1-0 after a 13th-minute header by Thierry Tazemeta, Bnei Yehuda's Assi Baldout equalized in the 48th minute with a header of his own off a free kick from Galvan. Dela Yampolsky salvaged the draw with a goal in the 80th minute

Two quickfire goals by Hapoel Petah Tikva striker Shimon Abuhatzira sealed Bnei Sakhnin's fate at the Doha Stadium, as the hosts fell 3-0 and back into the relegation zone. Abuhatzira scored in the 20th and 22nd minutes.

Even after Abuhatzira was dismissed after his second yellow card, Sakhnin was helpless. Some 3,000 home fans were disgruntled by Sakhnin coach Freddy David, but club chair Hasan Abu Saleh defended him.

"Freddy is not to blame and is not the problem," he said. "The players are to blame. They have no fight. We'll sit and decide tonight what steps to take."

In Tel Aviv, Maccabi's free fall continued as the team fell to Ironi Kiryat Shmona 1-0. Head coach Ran Ben Shimon, who was booed by fans, told reporters after the game he was taking full responsibility. He added he would try to figure out why his team - which made a number of major acquisitions over the summer - is losing to weaker opponents.
