News in Brief

Palestinian militants fired two anti-tank missiles at Israeli troops along the Gaza-Israel border on Friday, violating a four-month-old truce, the Israel Defense Forces said. Troops monitoring the fence near the Kissufim crossing came under fire from Gaza, the army said. There were no casualties. No Palestinian militant group claimed immediate responsibility for the attack. On Thursday, a little-known group calling itself Hezbollah Palestine claimed responsibility for firing a rocket from Gaza at southern Israel. The incident occurred after paratroopers observed two Palestinian militants planting a roadside bomb near Kibbutz Nir Oz, which is next to the fence on the Gaza border. The troops pursued, prompting the Palestinians to fire missiles at a bulldozer working with the troops. During the four-month truce, IDF troops have entered the Gaza Strip to handle what the army terms "immediate threats."

Defense Minister Ehud Barak said yesterday that though Israel is going to general elections in February, the interim government must not stop working toward securing the release of Israel Defense Forces soldier Gilad Shalit. Shalit was kidnapped by militants from the Gaza Strip in a cross-border raid in June 2006. Speaking at a cultural event in Tel Aviv, Barak said he was leading government efforts to initiate a worthy and achievable move to bring Shalit home, but that it would include some very difficult decisions. A Kuwaiti newspaper reported Friday that Hezbollah has appointed a replacement for Imad Mughniyeh, the Lebanese militant group's operations chief who was assassinated in February. The paper, Al Rai Al Aam, identified the replacement as Mustafa Shahada, a member of the group's military apparatus. The report has not been corroborated by any other source. According to the report, the decision was apparently reached ahead of Hezbollah's general convention a few weeks ago. Al Rai Al Aam described Shahada as a professional soldier who is highly regarded by the group's guerillas and leadership. Shahada had kept a very low profile. (Yoav Stern)

Universities across the country will open today as scheduled, the Council of University Presidents announced over the weekend. The announcement followed a meeting in which Prime Minister Ehud Olmert promised NIS 515 million for higher education. The council had threatened to cancel the academic year, saying the schools were unable to operate without additional state monies. Representatives of the universities' junior faculty members, however, threatened to strike unless the treasury honors their agreement. (Ofri Ilani)

A man from the northern Haifa suburb of Kiryat Yam was stabbed to death during a brawl in the nearby town of Kiryat Motzkin late Friday night. The victim was identified as 22-year-old Benny Katz. Police have arrested three suspects in the attack. All have police records. Police believe the stabbing stemmed from a romantic dispute. Eyewitnesses said that the men had been arguing since Friday afternoon. (Fadi Eyadat)

A 20-year-old Eritrean man was stabbed to death in Eilat yesterday. Police suspect two Ethiopian-Israeli residents of the city committed the murder. After the stabbing, passersby restrained the two men, both 25, until police came. The victim and the suspects had been arguing early yesterday morning. After the stabbing, the man was taken in critical condition to the hospital, where he died. (Fadi Eyadat)
