Pelicans en route to Africa face danger from angry Israeli fish breeders

Haaretz.com/Channel 10 daily feature for October 30, 2008.

An old war has resumed in the Hula Valley - between fish breeders and pelicans flying through.

Hundreds of millions of birds every year fly the length of Israel, which lies on one of the world's most important bird migration routes. Among them are 40,000 pelicans traveling from Europe to Africa.

For years, pelicans have been dipping into fishponds in the Hula Valley, raising the ire of breeders who take matters into their own hands, shooting or electrocuting the migrants.

Last year, a successful collaboration between the Israel Nature and Parks Authority, fish breeders and the Agriculture Ministry saved hundreds of pelicans each year by setting up feeding stations for them. During the collaboration, only one single shooting incident was reported.

But the budget ran out. And this year's migration has thus far resulted in 60 dead birds.
