Soccer / Arbeitman shows he still has it with brace in Haifa victory
By Matan Krakow and Shai Nimrodi

Against a background of reports about his future with Maccabi Haifa, Shlomi Arbeitman scored a brace last night to give the Premier League table leaders a 4-1 victory over Maccabi Netanya in a pseudo-preview of the top two clubs' league match in two weeks. The win put Haifa back on top of Group 1.

Arbeitman, who previously made numerous misses and poor shots, finally scored his first goal in the 53rd minute and added another in the 81st. "I'm really glad Shlomi scored," said coach Elisha Levy. "Confidence is very important to a striker."

The game was more a match-up of the clubs' youth teams, and in that respect Levy's charges were far better prepared. The outstanding players among Haifa's young guns were midfielder Eyal Golsa and strikers Mohammad Ghadir and Ransford Osei.

In Petah Tikva, Hapoel Petah Tikva preserved its slim hopes of advancing to the next round by defeating Hapoel Tel Aviv 3-1. "We played anemic soccer," said Tel Aviv coach Eli Guttman last night, "bereft of excitement or commitment, and so the result was fitting."

Guttman fielded his young reserves and was unimpressed. "The young players who got the opportunity today played without hunger and looked complacent," he stressed.

Omri Ron, the Petah Tikva striker on loan from Maccabi Tel Aviv, scored a brace that shut up the home crowd. Local fans are unhappy that Ron is eating up a spot on the roster at their expense, en route to his return next season to Maccabi.

"I don't know why they're cursing me," said Ron after the game, "but I did the best job I could and am pleaed with scoring two goals in a game for the first time in my career."
