VIDEO / Women mayoral candidates from Arab, Haredi sectors challenge a male domain

Despite growing numbers of women in leadership positions around the world, the glass ceiling is as thick as ever in Israel.

Israel holds 82nd place in a list of countries ranked according to their political representation of women - far behind countries like Pakistan and Rwanda.

But municipal elections scheduled for November 11 signal reasons to be hopeful, even in particularly conservative communities. One of those rays of hope is Aviva Hajbi, an ultra-Orthodox woman from the predominantly religious southern town of Netivot, who is running for mayor.

Hajbi has gone against local rabbis, who, in exchange, have boycotted her and distributed literature calling members of the community to do the same. Still, she remains determined.

Sharing Hajbi's experience is Asma Agbariya, an Arab woman running for mayor of Tel Aviv-Jaffa.
