Barak to officials: Take action against right-wing activists in West Bank

Defense Minister Ehud Barak on Wednesday instructed the heads of the defense establishment to step up issuing restraining orders against right-wing activists in the West Bank, four days after rightist settlers rioting in Kiryat Arba called for "revenge attacks" and violence against Israel Defense Forces troops in response to the evacuation of an illegal outpost.

Barak convened a meeting of senior defense officials at his office in Tel Aviv to discuss the topic of law enforcement in the West Bank. Among those in attendance were Deputy Defense Minister Matan Vilnai, IDF Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi, Shin Bet security service director Yuval Diskin, Police Commissioner David Cohen and Attorney General Menachem Mazuz.

Barak said during the meeting that the right-wingers' attempt to undermine the authority of the state and its representatives, such as the IDF and the police, in the West Bank is "a serious and unacceptable phenomenon, and all the bodies within the establishment must work toward abolishing it."

In addition to issuing more restraining orders, Barak ordered the establishment of a task force that will coordinate between the defense establishment and the police, and will examine alternatives, such as legislation, that could put an end to the phenomenon.
