Biden voices 'unshakable commitment' to strong Israel-U.S. ties

Democratic U.S. vice presidential nominee Senator Joe Biden met with Israel's ambassador to the United States Sallai Meridor on Monday, and stressed his and his running mate presidential nominee Barack Obama's "unshakable commitment" to strong U.S.-Israel ties.

Biden's spokesperson, David Wade, said Tuesday that the two officials had a full discussion on the opportunities and challenges that Israel and the United States face together, from stopping Iran's nuclear weapons program to the pursuit of peace between Israel and its neighbors.

Also Monday, Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin also met Monday with Meridor as part of a three-city tour in Virginia.

Monday's meeting preceded a rally Palin held in the town of Leesburg. Palin greeted Meridor and apologized for not being able to meet with him sooner. "I look forward to hearing about your work with the Jewish Agency and all the plans that we have," she told him.

According to the Israeli embassy, the two officials discussed the bilateral relations between the U.S. and Israel, as well as the challenges both countries face in terms of the Iranian nuclear
threat.

Palin's visit to Virginia is designed to upend Democrat Barack Obama's advantage in pre-election polls in a state that hasn't backed a Democratic White House hopeful since 1964. Besides visiting Leesburg, Palin will travel to Fredericksburg and Salem.
