Revealed: IDF foiled kidnap bid, arrested infiltrator from Gaza

Israeli authorities arrested five weeks ago a Hamas operative who infiltrated Israel from Gaza in a bid to kidnap Israel Defense Forces soldiers, it emerged Sunday.

The IDF and Shin Bet security service arrested Jemal abu Duabah, a resident of the southern Gaza town of Rafah, after he illegally entered Israel from Sinai.

A Shin Bet security service investigation revealed that the would-be kidnapper crossed into Sinai from Gaza via a tunnel. During his stay in Sinai, he made his final arrangements for the abduction of the troops, whom he planned to smuggle back into the Gaza Strip.

The aim of the abduction was to hold more IDF soldiers to use as bargaining chips for Palestinian prisoners in held in Israeli jails.

IDF soldier Gilad Shalit was kidnapped by Gaza militants in 2006, in a cross-border raid similar to that planned by Abu Duabah.

Shalit is widely believed to be held in Gaza. Israel has been engaging in negotiations with Hamas for his release.

During his interrogation, Abu Duabah stressed that senior officials in Hamas' military wing trained him in Gaza.

He said they also funded the training of the cell which was meant to assist him in the planning and carrying out of the kidnap.

The investigation also revealed that Abu Duabah had intended to abduct the soldiers with the aid of another militant in Egypt. He had planned on luring IDF soldiers to the Egypt-Israel border by pretending to be engaged in a drug deal. He was then to have subdued the troops in order to take them by jeep to a tunnel leading to Gaza.

Abu Duabah was found in possession of sleeping pills, which he intended to use on the kidnapped soldiers.

The Hamas operative has been arrested in Israel a number of times before for illegally residing in the country.

The kidnap attempt came as Israel and Hamas maintained a cease-fire, still currently in effect, in the Gaza Strip, which began in June.
