Rightist MK's new slogan: No national service, no national insurance
By Mazal Mualem
Tags: Arabs, Israel News

Avigdor Lieberman's Yisrael Beiteinu Party launched a new campaign slogan this weekend: "Without national service, there is no national insurance."

The slogan refers to both the Arabs and the ultra-Orthodox, the two major population groups that refuse to do either army service or civilian national service.

It was unveiled at a rally for party activists in Acre, the site of five days of Jewish-Arab clashes earlier this month.

Lieberman believes elections will be called soon, and has thus begun preparing. He has plans to plaster his new slogan on billboards in Acre and three other cities with mixed Jewish-Arab populations - Haifa, Jerusalem and Ramle. He will also hold political rallies promoting this idea in each of these cities before next month's municipal elections.

The Arab-Jewish riots in Acre, which put the broader issue of Jewish-Arab relations on the national agenda, provided a convenient background for its launch.

Lieberman also plans to submit legislation that would require preferential national insurance payments to those who either served in the army or did civilian national service.

But Lieberman's main campaign slogan, also launched last week, will be "Strong leadership -

Lieberman now." It was chosen due to campaign research that found that "weak leadership" is something of great concern across the political spectrum.
