Palestinian security forces deploy in Hebron

Over 550 Palestinian policemen and officers deployed in Hebron early Saturday morning as part of a measure President Mahmoud Abbas hopes will strengthen his control over the West Bank.

Hebron is the third in the West Bank to be reinforced with forces loyal to Abbas.

Their mission will be to focus on reclaiming law and order, but also to tackle Hamas infrastructure in the area.

Hebron is the West Bank's largest city and considered a stronghold of the militant Islamic Hamas movement. Hamas seized Gaza by force in June 2007 and Abbas wants to prevent a repeat in the West Bank. Hebron is also known for a Jewish community numbering around 500 residents, living under Israel Defense Forces protection among hundreds of thousands of Palestinians.

"We are serious and willing to arrest anyone who disturbs law and order ... starting with illegal armed groups and whoever deals with illegal arms," the Palestinian security chief for the Hebron area Samih al-Saifi vowed on Saturday.

High-ranking Palestinian officers met with their Israeli counterparts at the beginning of the week to coordinate the deployment. The operation will begin in the southern part of Hebron, followed by the western part, and ending with a focus on the city itself.

The 550 policemen come from different Palestinian security forces, parts of which were trained in Jordan under the supervision of the U.S. security coordinator in the region, Lt. Gen. Keith Dayton.

The deployment of the force comes after the success of an earlier operation in Jenin.
