VIDEO / The Diva, the billionaire, and the trial that's shaking the Arab world
By Haaretz Staff and Channel 10
Tags: Suzanne Tamim, Crime, Egypt

Scores of police secured a Cairo courtroom on Saturday as an Egyptian billionaire and a security guard pled not guilty to the murder of Lebanese pop star Suzanne Tamim, found dead in her apartment in the Dubai Marina in July.

Hisham Talaat Moustafa, a senator and one of Egypt's largest property tycoons, is accused of paying Mohsen al-Sokary, a former police officer and employee of Moustafa, $2 million to murder Tamim, a former mistress.

To many Egyptians, the connections between money and power have made the trial all the more controversial.

Tamim rose to fame after she starred in the hit Lebanese program "studio el fan", a reality program and singing competition watched throughout the Arab world.

The trial could serve as a test of the transparency of Egypt's legal system, and an indicator of whether or not a man close to the regime will be able to get away with murder.
